That is a much deeper question. It also avoids the trap of assuming we already know what the future economic system or governance system should look like. Instead, the project becomes an inquiry into how civilization might become better at institutional learning under conditions of unprecedented evolutionary pressure.

Enough for the moment

Understood.

A productive stopping point, I think. The project feels considerably more coherent than it did even a few conversations ago.

The structure now appears to be:

  • Context: Evolutionary maladaptation.
  • Primary threats: Global warming and resource exhaustion.
  • Adaptive mechanism: Cultural evolution.
  • Primary unit of analysis: Institutions.
  • Key explanatory variables: Cognitive filters, institutional selection processes, and elite behavior.
  • Central challenge: Existing institutions may be incapable of adapting rapidly enough to planetary realities.
  • Research focus: Directed cultural evolution.
  • Working hypothesis: Humanity’s best hope is not designing a final ideal system, but improving the processes through which institutions are generated, tested, selected, and scaled.

The addition of elites was particularly important. It moved the framework away from a simple “institutions versus society” model toward a more realistic account of how institutional evolution actually occurs.

The question that continues to stand out to me is:

Under what conditions do powerful actors become agents of adaptation rather than agents of inertia?

That may ultimately become one of the pivotal questions in the entire project.

Good place to pause. The outline, concepts, and major tensions are becoming increasingly visible. The next stage may be less about generating new structure and more about testing the framework against historical cases—capitalism, nation-states, scientific institutions, abolition, welfare states, environmental regulation, and so forth—to see where the theory holds up and where it needs refinement.
